Riga: The Sleeping Beauty of Europe
Latvia is a land of ancient cultures and long history, packed with
archeological sites. The crafts of wool and linen weaving have been
practised here since prehistoric times. We even came across the
forerunners of modern sequins at the Latvian History Museum: shiny
metal beads embroidered on a wool cape. Riga was founded by the
Teutonic Knights in 1201 and instantly evolved into a rich and
powerful city. In 1282 it joined the Hanseatic League, and the Port
of Riga became the most important in the Baltic.
