Latvia has been invaded by many foreign powers and subjected to
Germanic influence for over 700 years. The country entered the
European cared for city which retains the traditional atmosphere of
a dignified people proud of their origins. Most of the inhabitants
are members of the Lutheran Protestant Church and the old town
centre is dominated by an impressive plain red brick, gothic
cathedral which houses a huge organ of timeless beauty. Grand
buildings in hanseatic style exude opulence. The old castle, once
residence of the Knights and Princes, is now home to the President
of the Republic, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, and the History Museum.
Lovers of art and history must definitely take a trip around the
Liberty district with its imaginatively decorated buildings, many
now housing embassies, banks or intemational companies. |
