Riga: The Sleeping Beauty of Europe
A trip to the Latvian
capital, the perfect fusion of history and modernity
Viaggio nella capitale lettone, una perfetta fusione tra storia e
modernita
Latvia is a land of
ancient cultures and long history, packed with archeological sites.
The crafts of wool and linen weaving have been practised here since
prehistoric times. We even came across the forerunners of modern
sequins at the Latvian History Museum: shiny metal beads embroidered
on a wool cape. Riga was founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1201 and
instantly evolved into a rich and powerful city. In 1282 it joined
the Hanseatic League, and the Port of Riga became the most
important in the Baltic. Latvia has been invaded by many foreign
powers and subjected to Germanic influence for over 700 years. The
country entered the European cared for city which retains the
traditional atmosphere of a dignified people proud of their origins.
Most of the inhabitants are members of the Lutheran Protestant
Church and the old town centre is dominated by an impressive plain
red brick, gothic cathedral which houses a huge organ of timeless
beauty. Grand buildings in hanseatic style exude opulence. The old
castle, once residence of the Knights and Princes, is now home to
the President of the Republic, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, and the History
Museum. Lovers of art and history must definitely take a trip around
the Liberty district with its imaginatively decorated buildings,
many now housing embassies, banks or intemational companies. The
Latvian capital is made up of a lot of neighbourhoods filled with
old wooden houses, international and traditional restaurants with
front gardens. The most famous Italian, French and German labels all
have sales outlets in Riga and there are also many traditional shops
which sell embroidery, knitwear or the famous woven linen, with
products worthy of old-time trousseau, without forgetting the
omnipresent amber.
Anna Osmushkina is
the best known designer, on an international level.
Anna has an atelier with fashion show theatre in
Riga as well as a boutique in Blaumania St. frequented by
celebrities. Local VIPs flock to her parties. The Blow
boutique-outlet in Barona St., is certainly worth a visit, it sells
previous seasons' garments by intemational brands at very
advantageous prices, as well as local Latvian fashion. Then there is
the impressive "Palazzo Italia" building, also in Barona St.: four
floors of Italian fashion, exclusively top men and women's labels,
accessories and beauty care. Mezgsines Italija stocks Italian
fabrics and Calais lace. Not to be missed a visit to the Putti art
gallery to admire jewellery created by exceptionally gifted artists,
and women and children's clothes made using artisan techniques. You
can find just about everything and anything at the huge Mols
shopping centre in the modem suburb near the River Daugava, goods
from all over the world plus local products. Latexpo is another
important concern in Riga, organising cteiuxe fairs (beauty,
iasnion ana1 design/ana1 rashton shows under the banner of the
Baltic Fashion Week, held in collaboration with the Russian Fashion
Week, which welcomes not only leading local designers but also
fo-reign names from the international fashion sector.
La Lettonia e una terra di antica cultura e storia,
ricca di siti archeologici. L'arte
della tessitura della lana e del lino e conosciuta fin dalla
preistoria. Nel Museo Storico della Lettonia
abbiamo incontrato anche gli antenati delle nostre paillettes: un
mantello di lana ricamato di sfere di metallo lucido. Riga e stata
iondata nel 1201 dai Cavalieri Teutonici ed e subito diventata una
citta ricca epotente. Nel 1282 entra a fare parte della Lega
Hanseatica, e ilporto di Riga diventa ilpiu importante del Baltico.
La Lettonia ha subito molte dominazioni
straniere, ma l'influenza germanica si fa sentire per oltre 700 anni.
Dal 2004 la Lettonia fa parte dell'Unione Europea. La citta e
bellissima e curata, e vi si respira la storia di un po-polo fiero e
orgoglioso delle proprie radici. La religione
dominante e il potestantesimo luterano e il centro storico e
dominato dalla cattedrale gotica in mattoni rossi, imponente e
sobria, con un immenso organo di una bellezza senza tempo.
Grandi palazzi di sapore anseatico respirano opu-lenza.
L'antico castello, una volta residen-za dei
Cavalieri e dei Principi, or a e la dimora del Presidente della
Repubblica, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, e sede del Museo Storico.
Per chi ama l'arte e la storia, una tappa assolutamente impedibile e
il quai-tiere Liberty con palazzi dalle decorazioni fantasiose,
spesso sedi di ambasciate, banche o aziende internazionali.
Nella capitale lettone si possono trovare
nume-rosi quartieri in cui sorgono antiche case in legno,
ristoranti tipici e internazionalicon un giardinetto davanti.
I
label piu famosi d'ltalia, Francia e Germania hannopunti vendita a
Riga. Tanti anche i negozi tiadizionali, dove si vendono licami,
maglieria oppure il famoso lino tessuto alia maniera del corredo
delle nostre nonne, e naturalmente 1'onnipresente ambra. La
stilista piu conosciuta a livello internazionale e Anna Osmushkina,
che a Riga ha un Atelier con una sala per le sfilate e una boutique
in Blaumania St. dove veste le celebrities. Le feste di Anna sono
un raduno di VIP di Riga. Da notare la boutique Blow (Barona St.)
una specie di outlet dove si comprano ad un prezzo davvero
interessante capi di label internazionali delle stagioni scorse e
moda lettone attuale. Imponente anche il "Palazzo Italia"(Barona
St.): quattro piani di moda italiana, tutti top label, donna, uomo,
accessori e beauty. Nei Mezgsines Italija si trovano tessuti
italiani e pizzi di Calais. Da non perdere la visita alia galleria
d'arte Putti, dove si possono ammirare gioielli creati da artisti di
grande abilita, e abiti realizzati con metodi artigianali per la
donna e il bambino. Presso il grande shopping center Mols, nella
periferia moderna vicino al fiume Daugava, si trova tutto e il
contrario di tutto, merce dal mondo intero e produzione locale. Un 'altra
realta import ante di Riga e Latexpo, che organizza fiere di lusso
(beauty, moda e design) e sfilate sotto il nome Baltic Fashion Week,
in collaborazione con la Russian Fashion Week, ospitando, oltre agli
stilisti locali piu importanti, anche ospiti stranieri affermati nel
campo della moda internazionale
